Fishing Waters

Buzzards Bay

The broad, protected bay west of Cape Cod. Miles of rocky shoreline, sand flats, deep channels, and offshore structure create year-round habitat for striped bass, bluefish, sea bass, and the bait schools that feed them.

Overview

Protected Water, Productive Fishing

Buzzards Bay stretches roughly 28 miles from the Cape Cod Canal to the Elizabeth Islands, bordered by the south coast of Massachusetts to the north and the Upper Cape to the east. The bay averages 35 to 45 feet deep with a mix of sandy bottom, rocky ledges, and scattered wrecks that provide excellent habitat for both bottom fish and migratory gamefish. The protected geography means fishable conditions on days when exposed waters like Vineyard Sound and the open Atlantic are blown out.

The western shore of Buzzards Bay — from Westport to Marion — features rocky points, salt marshes, and tidal creeks that hold resident striped bass from May through October. The eastern side, along the Falmouth and Bourne coastline, offers sand flats and deeper channels where bluefish push bait against the shoreline during summer blitzes. Cleveland Ledge, a submerged reef in the center of the bay, is one of the most productive structure spots on the south coast of Massachusetts, holding sea bass, tautog, and stripers.

The Cape Cod Canal connects Buzzards Bay to Cape Cod Bay, and the tidal exchange through the canal creates strong currents that attract gamefish to both entrances. The southern end of the bay opens to Vineyard Sound through the passages between the Elizabeth Islands, making Buzzards Bay a natural staging area for fish moving between bodies of water. This connectivity is what makes the bay so consistently productive throughout the season.

Best Times & Conditions

Buzzards Bay fishing is productive from May through November. Striped bass fishing peaks in June and again in September-October during the fall migration. Summer months bring aggressive bluefish feeding on the surface and excellent bottom fishing for sea bass and scup. The bay's protected waters mean more fishable days than exposed locations — even when southwest winds build, the north shore of the bay stays relatively calm. Tide changes are key, especially around Cleveland Ledge and the Elizabeth Islands passages.
